User-friendly Mobile Search

Asklaila has announced the launch of its mobile search service. Asklaila’s mobile search allows consumers to search for information using their mobile phones by sending a text message to 58989. It can also be accessed through any Internet enabled mobile phone at m.asklaila. com. The search uses natural language processing for terms describing proximity, and understands Indian SMS abbreviations (nxt = next, CCD = Café Coffee Day) and locality short forms (Bnd = Bandra). Landmark information provides last mile locators, and attribute-tagged search like “24 hours pharmacy” and “Rooftop restaurant” are supported. For example, when searching for “ATM nr Bandra Rly Stn”, Asklaila responds via SMS with the addresses and landmarks for two ATMs, with the option to get more. The service is available in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai, with other cities to follow.

Hackers becoming more and more politically active

The number of web attacks which are not financially motivated is on the rise. “Welcome to the front lines of the 21st century information war”, comments the Wall Street Journal about an Internet attack that took place on the FreeEurope Radio server. Altogether eight websites belonging to the broadcasting service were not accessible for several hours. Symptoms that first seemed like a completely normal server failure turned out to be a calculated attack. More than 50,000 maliciously generated site calls per second forced the service to its knees. The potential originator of this cyber attack: Belarusian President Alexander Lukaschenko. The regime presumably wanted to prevent the transmission of an opposition report by using Hacktivism, i.e. politically motivated hacking. This should remind you of the end of the Soviet Union. Virtual attacks used to be carried out on radio and TV stations before the Internet became so popular. For example, the Soviets used to interfere with the transmission of content it wanted to suppress. Lukaschenko is considered to be an ardent fan of the USSR. Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks have no remedy. The technique behind such attacks is always similar. In the case of a three-hour attack on the CNN website, for instance, Chinese hackers spread a specially programmed tool to those who took part in the protest, turning their computers into a “botnet”.

At a pre-determined time, the participants simultaneously started something like a DDOS attack. The tool sent completely legitimate calls for a website. However, they were incredibly fast and in massive numbers. The CNN server couldn’t process the flood of enquiries, and crashed. At present there is no simple means of protection against these attacks. The American radio service solved its problem by simply limiting the number of enquiries it could accept from the Asian region. However, this only suppressed the problem till the attack was over and did not actually solve anything. As the rest of the world could easily call the website, bonafide visitors from China and India were locked out for hours on end. Incidentally, Hacktivists who don’t manage to motivate enough participants also indulge in such forms of attack. The Internet mafia can rent out their botnets for just $100 a day, perfect for conducting such political activities. DDoS attacks from botnets have most commonly been used for blackmailing. At first, a small show of strength will prove to the victim that their site can be thrown offline, and then money is demanded. If the to-be-victims don’t accept the demands for payment, then their servers are bombarded and forced down for several days. For commercial sites, this can be a disaster. They stand to lose far more in profits if their customers can’t access the sites anymore.

HP developing memristor-based super memory for computers

After proving the existence of the memristor earlier this year, HP has announced its scientists are advancing the technology even further by successfully engineering control over a functioning device. Memristors, previously theorized but never proven to exist, would be a whole new fundamental building block for electrical engineering. A memristor has the unique ability to remember data stored in it without a source of power, opening the doors to entirely new fields of electrical circuit design. One major potential application is the development of new kinds of computer RAM and solidstate drives which would retain data when a computer is switched off, thus allowing for instantaneous booting, faster working, and resilience to power failures. Another potential application of memristor technology could be the development of computer systems that remember and associate series of events in a manner similar to the way a human brain recognizes patterns. This could substantially improve today’s facial recognition technology, enable security and privacy features that recognize a complex set of biometric features of an authorized person to access personal information, or enable an appliance to learn from experience. HP scientists have now developed a switch measuring 50 nm2 using memristor technology. However, this is only the model, and they are yet to turn it into new designs for integrated circuits. The technology will take many more years before it becomes ready to be launched in the mass market.

“Upgraded” Canon cameras offer professional-grade features for free

Many electronic gadgets are cut down in their functionality so that different models can be sold at different prices. Certain compact cameras from Canon which use the Digic II and Digic III image processors have been found to contain more pro features than what is offered by the original firmware. Users can tune their cameras themselves with add-on firmware currently circulating on the Internet. The “Canon Hacker’s Development Kit” is an open source initiative that enables and extends functions such as RAW photo mode, high dynamic range (HDR) photography and live histograms. The process appears to be harmless: users only find and download the kit, copy the unzipped files onto an empty memory card and insert it into the camera. After starting in the “playback” mode, the “firmware update” entry in the main menu can be used to call up the kit. No change is made to the camera’s firmware, and the kit can easily be deleted from memory by switching the camera off. As expected, Canon uses the warranty to deter users: “In case any interference from software that is not certified by Canon is found, the warranty claim expires”, said Jörg Ammon, product manager, Canon to CHIP in Germany. At present, the CHDK is available for around 30 Canon models.
